Best of '06?
Tis around the time I usually start trying to figure out whether or not
it has been a good, bad or indifferent kind of year for the music I
dig, so I'm engaged in sifting through what has passed my ears this
year for nuggets of indelibility - you know, those musical treats that
you figure you'll still be listening to in the years to come. My list
is not quite done yet but it seems to be one of the better years in
recent memory. So anyone who got further down the track with their
adjudication of the year...please share.

where to begin...?
I agree, I think 2006 will probably end up looking in retrospect like a
great year for music (if one goes by that whole calendar way of
dividing things up, of course). My problem is that I've acquired TONS
of music this year that I haven't had time to fully process yet, since
I've been desperately trying to catch up on stuff I fell behind on the
past couple of years (sigh...).
That said, I can definitely list United Bible Studies Shore that Fears the Sea, and Mike Tamburo Ghosts of Marumbey (which I raved about on the site recently)... Those are off the top of my head, beyond that I'll have to do some sifting through the piles...
Would love to hear others' thoughts! More feedback please...

Off the Top of My Head
This would be my list at the moment:
Best 10 For Year:
Agitated Radio Pilot "Your Turn To Go It Alone" (Rusted Rail 2x3" CD-R)
Anton Barbeau "In the Vilage of the Apple Sun" (Four-Way)
Nick Castro and the Young Elders "Come Into Our House" (SAAH)
Children of the Stones "The Bright Day Is Gone" (Deserted Village CD-R)
Current 93 "Black Ships Ate the Sky"(Durtro)
Espers "II" (Drag City)
Fern Knight "Music For Witches and Alchemists" (VHF)
Handsome Family "Last Days of wonder" (Carrot Top)
Tanakh "Ardent Fevers" Alien 8
United Bible Studies "Shore That Fears the Sea" (Deserted Village)
Heavy bias on the Deserted Village/UBS axis, but my year has been dominated by that stuff.

I don't know why, but this year I'm
ending up with a really long list of albums I loved. Last year was the
opposite where I struggled to come up with just ten favorites (even
after cheating and counting reissues like Link Wray's "Three track
Shack), but this year I enjoyed stuff coming from indie's godfathers
quite a bit. And the pop. Uhh, guilty pleasures? Guess I'm getting too
old to be ashamed. So yeah, here goes a trainwreck of a list, in a sort
of kind of order.
- Natural Snow Buildings "Dance of the Moon and Sun"
- The Zebras "Worry a Lot"
- Oneida "Happy New Year"
- Simon Joyner "Skeleton Blues"
- Tom Waits "Orphans, Brawlers, and Bastards"
- Richard Buckner "Meadows"
- Oakley Hall "Gypsum Strings"
- Home "Sexteen"
- Mountain Goats "Get Lonely"
- Clear Spots "Mansion in the Sky"
- Neptune "Patterns"
- Film School "Film School"
- Colossal Yes "Acapulco Roughs"
- Yo La Tengo "I am not afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass"
- William Elliot Whitmore "Song of the Blackbird"
- Sloan "Never Here the End of It"
- Peter Bjorn and John "Writers Block"
- Califone "Roots and Crowns"
- The Winks "Birthday Party"
- Black Fiction "Ghost Ride"
- El Perro Del Mar "El Perro Del Mar"
- Ed Gray "The Late Gray Ed Great"

bests
I just got an inspired package from our friends at VHF including the new Pelt live album (breathtaking as ever) and Aethenor's "deep in the ocean sunk the lamp of night"--a truly remarkable 35 min treck through breathing ambient noise, subharmonic drones, broken music box melodies and collage. AMM, Mirror, HNAS and things like that come to mind, but also maybe early Labradford stuck in an HP Lovecraftian fever dream. Really amazing, textured, highly polished live sounding stuff. And a stunning package too. It'ss one of Stephen O'Malley's many projects, but pretty far removed from all that doom and gloom stuff he's known for. Hope more people hear this one.
You guys would probably dig that Wooden Wand and the Skyhigh Band's "Second Attention"...solid folksy psych roots, a step away from the damage of ww/vv, and I actually buy what he has to say here. In the past I've had my doubts. Nice echo-chamber production, really murky and dusted out sound, like that Flying Canyon album that Soft Abuse released recently.
richard youngs/alex neilson/alastair galbraith's "belsayer time" on time-lag should not be forgotten either. I agree with a lot of the stuff on your list, Tony, and the Christian Kiefer album you released this year is a real stunner. Been soaking up his album with Sharron Kraus since that discovery, which is really incredible too. I do agree that 2006 is the best of the 00s yet. So much music though. Too much. Must get to soaking it all in!

I totally forgot about the amazing Flying Canyon CD and Kiefer/Kraus's "The Black Dove" and just in is an extraordinary Sharron Kraus/Meg Baird/Helena Espval CD on BoWeavil under the project title Leaves From Off The Tree, so I might have to expand my list to a baker's dozen at least!
And I have the same VHF package but haven't even had the chance to listen to it yet. The Aethernor think does seem like it will be amazing.

and further
I thought "the black dove" was actually an 05 release. If it was 06, it's in contention then. Also big ups to your bro, Tony. "Fizheuer Zieheuer" by Ricardo Villalobos is one of the most incredible minimal techno records I've ever heard. This is special. And it's really easy to dance to. Wouldn't be surprised if I sneaked in my year end tally out of nowhere. And yea, Aethernor is really compelling. So happy to see that on VHF.

The Black Dove
Pretty sure it's a 2006 release. That's what it says in the several places I looked, including allmusic.com. You might have gotten a promo earlier...
